April 2, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider C I Host (cihost.com) said on Thursday that it is replacing its security solution provider Atlanta-based Internet Security Systems (ISS.net), developer of the BlackIce Defender firewall (blackice.iss.net).
C I Host said it is replacing BlackIce with 3Com's firewall server PCI cards for all its servers. The 3Com cards combine firewall hardware and management software, a configuration that C I Host says provides critical advantage over software-only products. The deployment is "in the tens of thousands of dollars," said Christopher Faulkner, the company's CEO.
The announcement comes on the heels of the damage caused by the Witty worm, which struck on March 20 and affected a number of Web hosting providers. The worm targeted Windows servers running the BlackIce Defender firewall, exploiting a weakness. C I host, which suffered outages after the worm attack, expressed dismay at having been left vulnerable by the firewall implementation.
Faulkner said the company had previously installed BlackIce firewall on its servers, which he said were adversely affected by the Witty worm.
