May 1, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hurricane Electric (he.net) today announced that it has created a public route server. The server is designed to allow the public to see routing paths from inside Hurricane Electric?s network via telnet at route-server.he.net.
Level 1 PCI DSS Certified Service Provider! DataPipe delivers the best network & support; top tier data centers; New York metro, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai. DataPipe - Personal Touch, Global Reach.
The public route server, designed mainly for expert users, enables users to ping or trace and test network connectivity from any or all core routers in Hurricane Electric?s network. In addition, users are able to view Hurricane Electric?s entire BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) tables showing paths to other company networks or autonomous systems. It also allows users to run a BGP summary, which shows statistics on all neighboring routers and peering sessions.
The Public Route Server was developed to allow any network operator or customer to check on the stats of the network or routes taken from a source to a destination at any given time simply through an IP address query. This gives customers the ability to see how their packets are traversing the Internet, revealing the time it takes for a packet to arrive at its destination.
Hurricane Electric also offers their Looking Glass to the public via a Web interface at lg.he.net. The Looking Glass allows less advanced queries into Hurricane Electric's network.
The Public Route Server is currently able to run through seven routers in the core of Hurricane Electric?s network at the following locations: Fremont, CA; New York, NY (NYIIX); San Jose, CA (MAEWest); Equinix, San Jose, CA; Palo Alto, CA (PAIX); Chicago, IL (AADS); and Equinix, Ashburn, VA.
Hurricane Electric is a provider of colocation, dedicated servers, dedicated Internet access and Web hosting. Based in Fremont, California, Hurricane Electric operates its own national network, running Gigabit Ethernet and multiple OC-3's.
