Paul Twomey, chief executive for ICANN, said the organization, which oversees management of the domain name and Internet protocol address system, will cut ties with the US Department of Commerce in 2006 and firmly dismissed the possibility that it would ever be under the control of an international organization.
According to the report, ICANN is set to release a 63-page plan for the organization, which details its budget and plans to encourage participation from developing countries, which missed out on the first wave of Internet commercialization in the 1990s. The organization reportedly wants more participation from developing countries and strongly supports their efforts to gain control of their country code domain names.
