The news follows reports last month that US prosecutors had made several indictments against Lexitrans Inc. and other shell companies based in Overland Park, Kansas, believed to be linked to the Gambino crime family. These companies allegedly ran adult Web sites and 900 numbers that defrauded customers by illegally charging for subscriptions to services advertised as free. Reports say the Lexitrans case is believed to be the largest fraud in US consumer history.
Lexitrans moved to Kansas in 1996 from New York. The company is alleged to have used a variety of schemes and technologies to defraud customers.
