May 9, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Domain name registrar Register.Com (Register.com) said yesterday it had signed a contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to oversee the new .pro domain registry.
Level 1 PCI DSS Certified Service Provider! DataPipe delivers the best network & support; top tier data centers; New York metro, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai. DataPipe - Personal Touch, Global Reach.
The .pro domain registry will only offer domain registration to certified professionals such as accountants, doctors and attorneys. The cost for a single .pro domain name will likely range between $250 to $300.
The domain name will be more expensive due to the costs involved in determining whether the .pro applicant is a credentialed professional. A .pro domain name will also be more expensive since the domain name will include a digital certificate that can be used to send and receive encrypted e-mail and to send digital signatures for official purposes.
The .pro extension will be the first professionally restricted top-level domain on the Internet and is expected to launch at the end of 2002 or early next year.
RegistryPro, a Register.Com subsidiary, will operate the domain registry.
