LIAM EAGLE: LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The cover image of this month's issue describes a feature on the return of data center physical security as an issue, made prominent again by a recent string of notable break-ins and thefts in the US and UK.
However, our starting point for the editorial was a long feature about the evolving attitude toward software as a service in the hosting business, where years of evangelism have created a climate in which small businesses and enterprises are willing to make hosted applications part of their businesses, and hosts are prepared to sell them.
Regular contributor Wayne Epperson contributed a feature called the SaaS Score Sheet, which gathers the input of a long list of platform builders, trendsetters and decision makers, seeking the answers to questions like "what are the right ways to build a SaaS platform?" and "what applications are ready to put into production right now?"
The evolving SaaS attitude in the hosting community will undoubtedly be on display at the upcoming HostingCon event, where the WHIR will have a significant presence.
By extension, the event has a considerable presence in the magazine. Part of that is the feature by Esther M. Bauer, designed as a kind of primer for getting the most out of the event. Another is the presence of notes throughout the issue intended to steer readers toward the sessions and exhibits where they can meet the people and companies they're reading about on the page.
For those of you who won't be attending HostingCon, the WHIR will be providing its most comprehensive coverage ever of the event, through our news, blogs, features and WHIR tv.
Those of you who are in attendance can stop by our networking lounge at boot #627 to meet the WHIR team (and enter to win a 50" flatscreen HDTV).
